PROFILE OVERVIEW

Charlemagne was born on April 2, 747, and died on January 28, 814. Charlemagne was the King of the Franks and Lombards. He united the majority of Western and Central Europe. He was the first ruler to hold power over Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. He founded the Carolingian Empire—the first phase of the Holy Roman Empire. Many refer to him as the Father of Europe.
